Going to the dentist can produce anxiety in even the most confident child, especially when it is his or her first visit. FUNtastic Dental in Long Beach, California understands this. We have designed our office to cater to children instead of expecting children to act like adult patients. Our office is so fun and stress-free for our pediatric patients that you might even wish you were a kid again. Children’s dentistry is certainly not how you remember it!
The Importance of Children’s Dentistry
Some parents do not pay as much attention to oral hygiene for young children as they should because kids lose their first set of teeth. However, failing to take proper care of the primary teeth can have negative consequences for the permanent teeth that come in between the approximate ages of six and 12. For example, your child’s dentist may need to remove a decayed baby tooth. This leaves open space for up to several years before the permanent tooth erupts and can alter the entire alignment of your child’s teeth.
An oral hygiene routine can begin even before your child’s first tooth erupts. After you feed your baby, wipe his or her gums with a damp cloth to eliminate bacteria in the mouth. Once your child has a few teeth, purchase a toddler-sized toothbrush and place a tiny amount of toothpaste on it to get the teeth clean.
Your child may want to start brushing his or her teeth independently by the preschool years. The hand-over-hand method is the best way to start teaching your child as well as allowing him or her to observe you. Be sure to continue supervising your child into the early elementary school years. Introduce flossing as early as you can and make sure that you or your child floss his or her teeth at least once a day.
How We Put the Fun in Children’s Dentistry
Children become accustomed to having to adjust to an adult world. We have seen the eyes of many young patients light up as they walk through our doors and see our Dental Theme Park and candy store. A candy store at the dentist’s office? Yes, but we only offer candy if it is sugar free. We keep wait times short and stock our waiting room with games, books, toys, and movies geared at children of all ages. Our staff is also mindful of your time as a busy parent. If you have to wait more than 10 minutes for your child’s appointment, let us know and we will deduct $50 from your bill.
The fun does not stop once we call your child back to the dental chair. He or she can continue to watch a movie on a DVD player in the exam room if desired. This helps to take a young patient’s mind off any possible anxiety while focusing on something fun.
